Vieworks Embeds AI in Slide Scanner to Advance Pathology Workflow Automation

Vieworks, a global imaging solution provider, has set a target of capturing more than 8% of the global digital pathology market within five years through slide scanners optimized for AI-based diagnostics.

 

Speaking at the Digital Pathology AX (AI Transformation) Conference during K-HOSPITAL + HEALTH TECH FAIR 2026 on Aug. 20, the company said it has begun embedding image pre-processing AI in its VISQUE DPS slide scanner and is preparing for commercialization, with plans to expand supply across North America, Europe and Asia.

 

Slide scanners serve as the data entry point for AI analysis. A focus deviation of only 1 to 2 micrometers during image acquisition can degrade AI model performance by 5 to 10%. Vieworks developed a deep learning-based scan area detection AI that identifies non-tissue regions such as pen markings, dust and air bubbles at the pixel level, filtering out areas that cause focus errors.
 

The company reported 99% focus alignment and a focus error rate below 1% in non-tissue regions, reducing re-scans. Technology also maintains focus reproducibility in cytology specimens, where cell overlap and thickness variation are common.

 

Vieworks is also developing a predictive maintenance AI that continuously monitors robotic arm slide transport through imaging to anticipate faults, supporting uninterrupted high-volume processing in unattended operation.

 


The presentation also covered Realtime Extended Focus, which acquires three images at different focal planes using three cameras simultaneously and fuses them in real time into a single fully focused image. Vieworks has filed or registered more than 20 patents related to the technology in Korea, the United States, Europe and Japan.

 

Deployment cases presented included Pennsylvania Dermatology Group in the United States, Ankara Bilkent City Hospital in Türkiye, and several hospitals in Korea.

 

The company plans to expand its lineup with a compact fluorescence scanner for space-constrained environments and a multi-channel fluorescence scanner for research applications such as spatial biology.

 

"As AI use expands in pathology, scanners are expected to go beyond image acquisition and produce precise, standardized data that AI can rely on." said Kang Yu-jung, head of the Bio Business Group at Vieworks.
